What’s the main difference between Botox® and hyaluronic acid?

Confusion between the two products used in aesthetic medicine is common. Many people get confused when talking about Botox and Hyaluronic Acid thinking they are the same, however they are not. While it’s true that they share many similarities, they offer different benefits and results.

What is botox?

Botulinum toxin type A is a muscle relaxer produced from bacteria. It is one of the most well-known med spa services, renowned for its ability to smooth wrinkles and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Botox only works on expression lines; it doesn't work with static wrinkles caused by collagen breakdown. Repeated treatments are necessary because Botox is not a permanent treatment. It’s a safe treatment, if you go with the right professional and certified healthcare provider.

Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. When those nerve signals are interrupted, the affected muscle is temporarily paralyzed or frozen. Without movement of these selected muscles in the face, certain wrinkles may be softened, reduced, or even removed.

Botox not only offers cosmetic benefits by smoothing wrinkles and fine lines, but it also has a range of medical uses. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), muscle spasms, TMJ disorders, and even overactive bladder. By temporarily relaxing targeted muscles, Botox can provide relief from pain, tension, and other symptoms, making it a versatile treatment option beyond aesthetics.

Botox and other treatments made with botulinum toxin are sometimes called neuromodulators or neurotoxins. The most popular and well-known brands of Botox are Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) is a type of temporary dermal filler. Hyaluronic Acid is a substance that is naturally produced by our bodies, with the highest concentrations in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin, hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated.

As we age, the fat, muscles, bone, and skin in our face begins to thin. This loss of volume leads to either a sunken or sagging appearance of the face, fine lines, wrinkles, folds, and thin lips. Injectable HA is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately.

There are many different brands of dermal fillers available, each formulated for specific purposes and treatment areas. While all fillers are designed to restore volume and enhance facial contours, some are better suited for fine lines, others for deeper folds, and some for areas like the lips, cheeks, or jawline. The most recognized fillers are typically made with hyaluronic acid, but formulations can vary in thickness, flexibility, and longevity. Well-known brands like Restylane®, Juvéderm®, and Belotero® each offer a range of products tailored to different aesthetic goals. During a consultation, your provider will recommend the best filler based on your individual needs and treatment area.

What differences can we find between Botox and Hyaluronic Acid?

  • Temporary effect: Although the effect in both treatments is temporary, its duration is not the same. The approximate duration of Botox is between 3 and 4 months, while Hyaluronic Acid fillers depend on many other factors such as the place where it was applied, the speed at which each person's body reabsorbs it naturally, with a variation of duration from 6 to 12 months.
  • Functionality: Botox is mainly used to correct the wrinkles that are formed by puckering or contracting certain parts of our face, especially in the upper third of the face such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, and the famous "crow's feet". On the other hand, the fillings with Hyaluronic Acid are used to fill cracks or wrinkles as well as to give volume in places like the lips, the cheekbones, or the chin.
  • Results: The results of the Hyaluronic Acid fillers are immediate, although the final result is usually visible after two weeks when the filler has already settled. The results of Botox begin to be seen after 3 days and its maximum effect is achieved after approximately 10 days.

What are the similarities between Botox and Hyaluronic Acid?

Botox and hyaluronic acid fillers are both popular medical cosmetic treatments used to reduce signs of aging and enhance facial features. While they work differently, Botox relaxes muscles and fillers add volume, they both help smooth wrinkles and improve overall facial appearance.

Both treatments should always be done by a qualified, experienced professional to ensure safe, natural-looking results. They’re minimally invasive, quick procedures with little to no downtime, making them popular choices for facial rejuvenation.
